Boardgame Branding Stylescape (Player Card Focus)
The Communist Clique is a fictional board game devised by a team of four designers; Elise Steingrabber, Courtney Crook, Hannah Wells and Myself. The board game's main characters involved 4 young female spies who conspired a plan to overthrow the government and cause the fall of the USSR. These protagonists are also whom the players will choose to play as.
We combined modern aesthetics and trends with 1920s Russian propaganda graphics to create the overall identity of the game. The emphasis of the femininity of the characters was a main drive for the brand aesthetics so we used language, colors and motifs which were stereotypically 'girly' and 'hyper-femme'.
As the designer for the characters and player cards, I wanted to make sure that the main girls were represented as not only unapologetically feminine, but intelligent and strong as well.
We wanted to use negative stereotypes often attributed to women and turn them around to become the characters' strengths that they use to their advantage.
I also came up with the idea to use iconic female characters from the early 2000s as inspiration for the main characters.
Our board game also required moving pieces, so we designed motifs for each player: a phone, a lighter, sunglasses, and a lipstick. I incorporated each motif in the design of the player cards where each character is seen using them in some way.
